Community Problem Solving Projects

AI Aware & Informed

AI aware & Informed focuses on making sure that children in our school have a full understanding on using Artificial Intelligence to ensure that as they get older and use it, they will be able to use it safely and effectively. To help educate the students we have put together an AI Week, which will help students learn how to
use AI safely and effectively. Each day of the week will have different activities, each one relating to the safe, effective use of AI. After reflecting on the feedback from our event, we will now continue the success of AI week by planning other initiatives to engage our community moving forward.

Bush Tucker

We are going to be raising awareness about Bush Tucker and aboriginal herbs in our school community. We will introduce Aboriginal cuisine and food options. We would like to raise an understanding of bush tucker which are readily available resulting in an awareness, nurturing and protection of bush tucker products such as Bunya nut, dessert lime, finger lime, ruby saltbush, and lemon myrtle.

Pencils for Purpose

Pencils for Purpose’s goal is to assist Dajarra State School, a remote school in Northeastern Queensland, by providing essential resources which will help to improve the educational outcomes of the students. Through our contact with the school, we have found that the town is very remote and has no shops or activities for students to do after school and that the school lacks resources that they can send home for students, such as games and engaging homework activities. We aim to use a variety of initiatives to provide resources for students to improve their educational outcomes.

SPEAK

SPEAK aim to develop resources to support English language skills and communication between students from differing cultural backgrounds as the number of cultures within our school community grows. We will create resources to support students where English is an additional language, assisting their understanding, engagement and communication with their peers and teachers, working on tasks to support and create a positive school experience in the early years of school. These resources will support students to practice and reinforce their English skills in authentic contexts.

Brighter Tomorrows

We believe that children who are experiencing extended hospital stays in years 3-8 face educational disruptions, social isolation, boredom, and loneliness. This can negatively impact their education, emotional well-being, and sense of connection. We aim to build a supportive initiative for these children and to help them to feel more uplifted. We hope that by giving children the resources to learn, it will help them have a successful and bright future.

Project Paws

Our group, Project Paws, is a group of Year 7 students who came together with a love for animals. Our concern and wish to advocate for animals in our community led to the creation of our project. We have connected to 4 Paws Animal Rescue and worked with our school community to advocate for the welfare of animals on the Sunshine Coast. We did this by creating activities that raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and gathering donations for the 4 Paws Animal charity.

Page Turner

Aims to promote reading in primary school aged children in our community. We aim to foster a love for   reading in these children, amidst their busy lives and a world full of easily accessible technology. We also aim to mitigate some of the gaps that may lead to a reduction in reading for these children, such as making reading feel less like a chore and more like a choice. To promote reading in schools, we can implement wide reading programs, establish book clubs, schedule regular storytime sessions, and engage library monitors in these activities.

Beyond Boundaries

Research shows that many neurodivergent and gifted students don’t always have their education needs catered for in educational settings, which can lead to
them not reaching their potential. The Beyond Boundaries project aims to provide neurodivergent and gifted students with programs that support the
improvement of their educational needs and learning.

Healthier Choices

Our project aims to direct students to making healthier choices by providing them with opportunities to partake in fitness and healthy eating challenges and educating them on the detriments of lack of health at a young age. What we hope to achieve by doing this is a more focused, fit and healthy Year 7 in our school community.

Shield

Our ‘S.H.I.E.L.D Program’ is aimed towards helping school students improve their mental health and wellbeing by giving them tools to combat bullying and people to talk to if they need help or feel unsafe in a situation. We have conducted surveys, put up posters around the school, raised awareness with all different types of resources (E.g. Videos, Website, etc.) to help support students go through hard times We intend to do some of our initiatives such as the Encounter Lunch to foster a sense of community and togetherness within our cohort and the school.

Road Safety

We found through various research, including surveying, that our school’s surrounding area experiences large amounts of traffic due to being situated within Bankstown Airport and next to a bus depot. Moreover, we noticed many adolescents engaging in dangerous behaviour near roads, such as being distracted or acting recklessly. We sought out to lower the frequency of road related accidents, through the education of children and parents/community about the dangers of poor road safety and how to avoid them. After identifying several ways in which to educate and to highlight road safety, we developed four solution ideas, three of which have been implemented successfully.

Happy Bag

The Wellbeing Project, “Happy Bags”, will involve a fundraiser run by the CmPS team to raise money and collect donated resources to be delivered in bags, prepared by the CmPS team. The bags will contain wellbeing and entertainment items such as toys, books, art materials, so that patients can have items they don’t need to share which boosts their mental health and reduces boredom. These Happy Bags will target the mental health of children in the paediatric wards; however, it also combats waste, ensuring unused and perfectly good items are not thrown away.

Drive Change

Traffic congestion around our school is causing significant delays, safety concerns, and environmental impacts for students, families, staff, residents, and businesses. Our project, Drive Change, Not Congestion, proposes a multi-step solution, we hope to open the Morris Grove to Green Road roundabout as a one-way exit to allow swifter release of banked up traffic, implement staggered school release times over grades in the primary and secondary students to ease school pick up rush in peak hour, relocate pickup zones by grade to spread the number of cars out across the campus, and finally, encourage carpooling and public transport use to both the students and staff of the college which drastically decreases the number of vehicles in the area. These actions aim to reduce emissions, improve road safety, ease local traffic pressure and delays, and promote sustainable travel. Our goal is a smoother, safer, and more efficient school commute for our entire community.

Eureka

The Eureka Project aims to reduce the underdiagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism in girls. Through targeted educational campaigns that dismantle stereotypes and false conceptualizations of how ADHD and/or Autism is expressed, the project helps teachers and parents better recognize overlooked presentations in girls. The project also strives to support late-diagnosed girls who carry the consequences of misdiagnosis or late diagnosis in a smooth journey to self-acceptance and thriving. The goal is to foster earlier identification and increased support for girls and gender diverse individuals across Victoria and beyond, ensuring they receive the same opportunities for success as their male peers.

The Rider Project

Across the Sunshine Coast, there is a rise in E-mobility devices (E-Bikes and E-Scooters) being used by teenagers. Consequently, there is a large increase in incidents and
accidents caused by teenagers riding these devices. This may be due to a lack of knowledge towards road rules, an urge to rebel or a distant awareness coming from
parents/carers. The RIDER Project aims to educate and build stronger understandings for teenagers and families about the importance of E-mobility safety so that they
can keep themselves and others on the road safe and free of injury.

DAISY

The D.A.I.S.Y (Daring All Individuals to Shatter Yesterdays stereotypes) project challenges harmful gender stereotypes among grades 7-9
students through strategic community education. After navigating institutional resistance, I've developed a multifaceted approach including
student surveys, assembly presentations, expert-led discussions, and creative expression opportunities. The initiative aims to create safe
spaces where adolescents can authentically express themselves without gender-based judgment. By combining data collection, educational
outreach, and artistic exploration, the project addresses both immediate student needs and broader community attitudes, working toward a
future where young people feel empowered to shatter limiting stereotypes.
