Alternate Booklet Competition

Alternate teams are made up of the reserve team members that belong to booklet teams in the various booklet divisions.  Being a reserve is a most difficult because you have to be a good FPS all-rounder who might have to step in at the last moment, taking over the role of any member of the team.  Consequently all the students who competed in this division deserve a great deal of praise. It is difficult enough to do an FPS booklet in two hours with people whom you know; imagine how hard it is, then, to do this with other students whom you have just met for the first time! The achievements of these students, therefore, are to be highly commended.

There are no separate Australian and Africa-Asia Awards in this particular competition.

The On-Site Scenario Writing Competition

In this competition at the Finals, Scenario competitors had to work in pairs to write a scenario on the Finals topic – Debt in Developing Countries – within two hours. All members of the best team receive special certificates and the best individual writer in each division will also receive a medal. In 2008, the judges felt that the quality of the competition was high enough to warrant the awarding of a runners-up placing to the second team.

Australian and Asia- Africa students compete together in this competition.

Presentation of Action Plans

The Presentation of Action Plans section was initially devised at the International Finals as a means of occupying booklet teams whilst the booklet evaluation was completed, but it is now far more than just an afterthought. In this competition, booklet teams have to demonstrate different types of creative thinking and teamwork by devising a short dramatic presentation that communicates the action plan that they devised in the booklet to an audience. A range of dramatic styles can and must be used, and the teams must show creative ways of integrating two mystery props and a quote into their presentations, along with making use of a given set of prop materials such as paper and foil. This year, the mystery props were a paper cone hat and a plastic silver spoon, with the quotation of Ôwaste not, want notÕ.

Alternates can perform with their main booklet teams, but there is no requirement for them to do so. However, performance of the Presentation is compulsory for a placing in the booklet competition. The results of the Booklet Competition and the Action Plan Presentations are completely independent of each other as the Presentation focuses on the quality of the way in which the details of the Action Plan are communicated to an audience, whereas the Booklet assesses the idea of the Action Plan itself.
